In 2021, the Western States Endurance Run began its journey in live event broadcasting, partnering with Studio 637 of Southern California as its production team. For several years prior, thanks in no small part to the work of the Run’s Chief Technology Officer, Ted Knudsen, Western States’ worldwide audience was able to follow the race’s progress via reports through Ultralive.net. The live broadcast collaboration in 2021 marked a significant milestone in bringing the beauty and challenge of an iconic event in realtime to a global audience.

However, the vast and remote terrain of the Western States course posed unique challenges for live broadcasting. In 2022, the integration of the Starlink system provided a game-changing solution, enabling the broadcast team to go live from even the most remote locations along the course. This technological advancement expanded the reach of the live broadcast with real-time coverage from previously inaccessible sections of the Western States Trail.

Behind the scenes, a dedicated team of Western States board members and consultants, including Billy Yang, Topher Gaylord, Ethan Vosburg, Dylan Bowman, and Craig Thornley, played integral roles in shaping the vision and direction of the live broadcast. The focus was on accurate and in-the-moment storytelling by well-versed and well-prepared commentators and the highest possible excellence and execution in production logistics.

At the forefront of the live broadcast have been the dynamic duo of Dylan Bowman and Corrine Malcolm. Both carry with them a deep understanding of ultrarunning and the story of Western States. Their insightful commentary, engaging interviews, and unwavering support for the athletes have won them well-deserved praise from the live broadcast’s audience.

The live broadcast continued its evolution into 2024, as the organizers welcomed Mountain Outpost as their new production team. Known for their innovative approach to outdoor storytelling and unparalleled creativity, Mountain Outpost’s unique production perspective, energy and high broadcast standards promises to bring an even more immersive experience for this year’s audience.

What began as a big experiment in 2021 has become part of what is now expected as part of the Western States experience. The live broadcast has helped to unite all runners who wish to experience Western States in a shared celebration of human endurance.
