Date: August 22, 2026
Two-Day Volunteer Effort in Granite Chief Wilderness with an Overnight Campout – At 8:00AM on Saturday morning please meet and park at the intersection of Soda Springs Road and Serene Road in Serene Lakes (to be confirmed one week prior). Be prepared for an overnight in the wilderness and 2 days of volunteer trail work. Clothing must include long pants, long sleeve shirt, sturdy hiking/work boots (6” high or greater), work gloves, and eye protection. Hard hats and tools will be provided. You may have to carry tools in and/or out of the wilderness.
From our Serene Lakes meeting location we will carpool in 4WD high ground clearance vehicles (if you have one please drive it) on Soda Springs Road to the intersection with Forest Service Road 51, and up Forest Service Road 51 (4WD & high ground clearance required) to its terminus at our Lyon Ridge Aid Station and Vet Check location. This will be our overnight camping location. Please bring everything you need for 2 days and a night in the wilderness (sleeping bag, a tent if not sleeping in your vehicle, extra clothing, cooking gear, fluids for 2 days, and food for 1 breakfast, 2 lunches, 1 dinner, and snacks).
On both Saturday and Sunday we will walk to our work site, about 2 miles east of the Lyon Ridge Aid Station and Vet Check location, work a full day, and return to our vehicles and camp site in the late afternoon. We will be at elevations between 7,000 ft and 8,000 ft., so please keep that in mind while you are hiking and working.
Although the commute to work will be fairly strenuous, and the work will be moderately hard to hard, particularly considering the elevation, the work will also be satisfying (you will learn a lot, and will be helping build what will be a spectacular trail), and the views will be incredible. And we should have time to socialize at camp on Saturday evening before retiring for the night.
We will send out confirming information with more details on logistics about 1 week prior to this trail work weekend.
